Mudvayne frontman Chad Gray recently shared his thoughts on James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. In an interview with Meltdown of Detroit’s WRIF radio station, the frontman initially talked about how he first discovered Metallica and its special place for him. As the conversation went on, Gray continued by comparing the two members.
The frontman seems to like Hetfield more than Ulrich. He said:
“He’s just a f*cking great guy, man. He’s a really cool dude. And not only just being insanely f*cking loaded, he is like the godfather of metal — he really is. His f*cking picking hand — all the great f*cking guitar players have modeled their right hand from his right hand. He is the fastest down-picking motherf*cker on the planet.”
Gray then named many rockers and praised Hetfield. He continued:
“Scott Ian [Anthrax], Dimebag [Darrell] — f*cking, you name it. People literally [focused] on his right hand. And lyrics? Lyrically, he’s a f*cking beast. He told stories about the f*cking plague, about this, about that. And he’s the songwriter, man. I guarantee you all those riffs are his riffs.”
The frontman then compared the two and topped it off by explaining why he likes Hetfield more:
“Lars is, like, even with him because Lars kicks a beat to what he writes, but at the end of the day, Lars is a drummer, and James Hetfield’s James f*cking Hetfield, and you can’t touch that sh*t.”
The two got compared many times by other musicians and rockers. Winger’s Kip Winger is also among the names who compared the two. In the music video for ‘Nothing Else Matters,’ Ulrich is seen throwing darts at a poster of Kin Winger. He revealed that Ulrich never called him to apologize, but Hetfield did, which he thought was sincere.
