Band rivalries are common in music. Sometimes, these rivalries lead to great music; other times, they’re about clashing personalities or different artistic ideas. But occasionally, a rivalry turns into a strong friendship. This happened with Jack Black and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D, who went from being rivals to becoming close friends and bandmates.

Black and Gass first crossed paths in Los Angeles, both being part of The Actors’ Gang theater troupe. The troupe was a melting pot of talent, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the two musicians. In a 2003 interview with Moviehole, Black reflected on these early days, saying:

“I met him at a theatre company called The Actors Gang in Los Angeles in 1990. We were enemies at first; we were rivals. We were like the musical dudes in the theatre company. But after a couple of years, we joined forces and became best friends, and thus the D was born.”

Balancing Personal And Professional Lives

This partnership, born out of initial animosity, was the foundation of what would become Tenacious D. As with any relationship in the music industry, the blending of personal and professional aspects can be challenging. In an interview for the book ‘Life In The Stocks Vol.1,’ Gass discussed how their friendship evolved. The musician explained:

“With Jack constantly working on movies, there was a lot of time away from the band. I just became side-lined. But in a way it actually helped me because that’s when I started doing side-projects; I couldn’t just wait around for Jack because I like playing too much. So, I made some lemonade out of the lemons. And I really love my band now. We have a great time. It’s not Tenacious D size, but what is?”

The breaks between Tenacious D’s albums were mainly because of Black’s growing movie career, where he acted in big films like ‘High Fidelity’ and ‘Tropic Thunder.’ These breaks allowed Kyle to work on his own music and start the Kyle Gass Band.

Tenacious D’s song ‘Kyle Quit the Band’ from 2001 humorously tells the story of Kyle leaving the band because of Black’s behavior, showing how they turn personal experiences into funny songs. In 2021, they jokingly tweeted that Gass left the band, which was just an April Fools’ prank and a nod to their song.
