Hayley Williams On Recovering From Her Divorce With Chad Gilbert

Paramore’s Hayley Williams recently spoke to Los Angeles Magazine about her divorce from New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert in 2017. The singer talked about how she recovered after the divorce by working on her solo album ‘Petals For Armor’ and Paramore’s latest album ‘This Is Why.’

Hayley had this to say about turning her emotions into songs for her solo album, particularly on the track ‘Dead Horse’:

“I was kind of bearing the weight of my divorce and needing some very intense therapy. I was home, and I was going through a lot, learning a lot about myself, and using that lens to see the world.”

In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, the singer also shared that she felt guilty throughout her 20s about how her relationship with Gilbert started, considering the guitarist was married when they first met. However, when it came to her divorce, Hayley shared that she did her healing via writing songs.

Besides sharing the story of her experiences in her solo album, Williams shared with Los Angeles Magazine that her ‘rage’ trickled into the band’s most recent album ‘This Is Why.’ She expressed:

“I was home, and I was going through a lot, learning a lot about myself, using that lens to see the world. That led to making ‘This is Why’ with the guys and realizing how much of my angst and rage was still there.”

However as the writing process for the album progressed, the rocker shared that the pandemic made her realize certain things about the world. Hayley added:

“Now I feel it more in terms of the way that the world works — every single choice matters. I got really discouraged and felt kind of hopeless by the fact that we went through so many huge things as a global community, and we didn’t get any kinder to each other.”
