The surviving members of the Grateful Dead have revealed they were planning a 60th-anniversary reunion before the passing of bassist Phil Lesh.
In an interview with CBS This Morning, Grateful Dead members Bobby Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart discussed how they had been planning a reunion to celebrate the band’s 60th anniversary next year with Lesh. They had even scheduled rehearsals. The interview took place just five days after Lesh’s passing.
“I was hoping that we could play with him again one more time,” Kreutzmann said. “So that, that was my sadness…’Cause I know he wanted to play with us again too.”
Weir added, “We were kickin’ it around. In fact, we were gonna, we were gonna get together and, and kick some songs around tomorrow.”
When Kreutzmann said, “I was hopin’ that we could do it,” Weir added, “We were gonna see where it goes. But we were just gonna play the four of us.”
Lesh passed away in October at the age of 84. A statement shared on social media at the time stated that he ‘passed peacefully’ and was ‘surrounded by his family and full of love.’
Over the years, several reunion projects like The Other Ones took place. The Other Ones had Lesh, Weir, Kreutzmann, and Hart reuniting at different times. However, the four musicians came together for the 50th anniversary Fare Thee Well concert in 2015. Joined by Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby, and Jeff Chimenti, the concerts were a direct lead-up to the ongoing Dead & Company group, although Lesh was not part of this band.
