Glen Matlock recently commented on the possibility of new Sex Pistols material. He addressed the band’s future in a statement shared on Louder Than War.

When asked about his continued enjoyment of performing Sex Pistols songs, Matlock emphasized the unique musical chemistry between the remaining members of the iconic punk band.

“You know, I really do. And just playing with Steve and Paul. We all learnt to play together, so when we get in a room, get on a stage, plug in and start playing, it just sounds like the Sex Pistols even if you’re having a good day or a bad day,” Matlock said. “We don’t normally have a bad day musically. But it’s something that the three of us have got in common over anybody else in the world. When we plug in, we’re the Sex Pistols musically, and John was always the icing on the cake.”

Matlock acknowledged the challenge of creating new material without frontman John Lydon. He expressed both his ambitions and his awareness of the potential risks involved in such a venture.

“I do wish we could have a few new numbers. I’ve got ideas for songs, and the other guys probably have as well. But whether the world wants another Sex Pistols album without Johnny Rotten is another matter,” he explained. “I see it as a challenge to be addressed and not to be shirked from.”

While Matlock’s comments suggest openness to new material, the band’s actual plans for 2025 tell a different story. Universal Music Canada reported that the Sex Pistols are moving forward with a major North American tour. The tour will feature new singer Frank Carter alongside Matlock, Steve Jones, and Paul Cook. This marks the band’s first U.S. tour since 2003 and will celebrate their legacy through live performances.

The question of new studio material remains contentious within the band. 98KUPD revealed that Steve Jones has publicly stated he does not think making a new Sex Pistols album is a good idea. This creates a divide between the members on the issue. Jones’ position suggests that despite Matlock’s enthusiasm for writing new songs, significant internal disagreement exists about pursuing a full studio album.

The band’s focus for 2025 remains firmly on live performances and celebrating their classic material. Ultimate Classic Rock noted that the North American tour will include performances of their landmark 1977 album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols in its entirety. Fans will have the opportunity to experience the band’s most iconic work live.

John Lydon’s absence from the band’s future plans is definitive. Metal Head Zone reported that Glen Matlock has ruled out any possibility of Lydon’s return. He stated there is “no way back” for the former frontman due to ongoing political and personal conflicts. This decision has solidified the band’s direction with Frank Carter as the new vocalist, marking a significant chapter in the Sex Pistols’ evolution.
