My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way hinted that the band hopes to record its first new album in more than 15 years, according to Rolling Stone.
Way made the remarks during the closing night of the band’s Black Parade tour in San Antonio on September 12. He addressed fans directly about the possibility of new music and thanked them for their support over the years.
“Just know that, like, we’ve kind of really always wanted to make another record, so we hope that life allows us to do that,” Way said. “Cause you guys, honestly, you guys kept us alive so long.”
“You guys deserve another record,” he continued. “I don’t know when it’ll be. But it’ll be awesome.”
No timeline has been set for the project. Still, the moment carried extra weight given the setting and the milestones surrounding it.
The San Antonio performance marked the North American finale of the Black Parade tour, played to a nearly sold-out crowd at the Alamodome. The night included a special guest appearance from King Diamond, who joined the band onstage. His appearance added to the sense of occasion as the tour’s US leg came to a close.
If the band follows through on Way’s comments, the resulting album would be My Chemical Romance’s first full-length release since 2010’s “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.” The gap has stretched well beyond a decade, making any hint of new material a significant moment for longtime fans.
The tour itself has centered on celebrating “The Black Parade,” the 2006 album that remains the band’s most commercially successful release. That celebration continues beyond the stage: the group has announced a 20th-anniversary reissue of the album. The reissue is due out October 23 through Reprise Records and will feature six bonus tracks alongside the original tracklist.
Taken together, the reissue and the tour’s emotional final show suggest a band using this anniversary to look back. At the same time, the band is leaving the door open to what comes next. Further updates on a potential new album are expected as My Chemical Romance moves forward following the conclusion of the tour.
