Rock music has always had its share of stars who are not just famous for their music but also for their appeal as ‘sex symbols.’ This concept goes beyond just looks; it’s about how the energy and style of these musicians make them stand out and attract fans. Genesis’ Phil Collins also fits into this category, although he doesn’t have the usual image of a rock ‘n’ roll sex symbol.

With the commercial success of Genesis and his solo career, the singer has gained a massive following. His guest appearances on other albums, special events, and acting career have also contributed to his popular image as a rock star. Speaking to David Sheff in a previous interview, Collins was asked whether he felt astonished about being considered a sex symbol. The musician replied:

“Yeah, but, see, I have this theory. You know, when they have those polls about the most attractive men, somehow good old Woody Allen always comes out on top. That saves the day for me. He’s more consistently up there than someone like Tom Selleck or Don Johnson, who are the traditional good-looking chaps.”

The Woody Allen Comparison Of Collins

Explaining why his situation is similar to Allen’s, he continued:

“He beats them because of personality. His sense of humor is far more important than anything else. I probably tend to do better than others because of my personality, rather than my intense good looks.”

Jon Bon Jovi’s Humorous View On The Sex Symbol Label

Notable names like Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry, and Jon Bon Jovi could be considered among other artists who are labeled as sex symbols. Jovi finds it amusing to be viewed as a sex symbol, as his wife humorously claims that this idea is far from the actual hard rock reality. The singer said in a 2010 interview with Extra:

“My wife thinks I’m fat and old [laughs]. But hey, for an old man who has no plastic surgery, still has all his own hair, and wears a 30-inch waist, I’m doing okay!”

In a previous chat with Kerrang!, Jovi expressed his dislike for being labeled as a sex symbol. He prefers to be recognized for his skills as a songwriter, something he takes pride in and would accept compliments for. However, the idea of being regarded primarily for his sex appeal doesn’t suit him.
