The exchange began when a fan suggested Simmons should retire, prompting a sharp reply from the musician. One fan wrote, “Why can’t people just stop, retire and have some dignity which you a thread of, Gene.” Simmons responded, “Retire? And do what?”

Another fan pushed back, arguing that Simmons could not relate to ordinary work. “Once you’ve worked an office job or a blue collar job you can ask that question again,” the fan wrote.

Simmons then detailed his own work history in response. “Well…I started working at 12 years of age working for a butcher, grinding the fat from the butcher’s block,” he said. “I delivered newspapers. I was the assistant to the director of the Puerto Rican interagency council. I was the assistant of the editor of Vogue magazine. And I was a 6th grade teacher. And what have you done with your life?”

The conversation escalated when a fan accused Simmons of paying someone else to run his social media interactions. “You know what is really retarded? All of you thinking you are chatting with the real Gene Simmons! He pays someone to do this. Keeps the money flowing so everyone can earn some. Read past posts of his. Earn, spend, earn more, repeat,” the fan commented.

Simmons firmly denied the claim in his response. “Sad to say, you’re a small person,” he said. “For you to make up something like this about me, when you don’t know me, you’ve never met me and you’ve never spoken to me. Kindly mind your own business and go figure out what makes you happy in your life. And good luck to you.”

The exchange took place entirely through Simmons’ verified X account, where he continues to interact directly with fans and critics alike.

This is far from the first time Simmons has clashed with fans and critics online over his personal choices and public statements. The 76-year-old rocker has built a pattern of firing back at detractors rather than staying silent, a habit that stretches across multiple platforms and multiple controversies over the past year.

Earlier this year, Simmons found himself in a similar back-and-forth after fans criticized his expansion into the film industry, questioning why he needed to keep chasing new business ventures given his existing wealth. Simmons did not hold back, branding one critic a “jealous loser” and defending his right to pursue new projects regardless of his financial standing. “For you to make up something like this about me, when you don’t know me,” echoes the same defensive tone he has used repeatedly when fans question his motives.

Simmons has also stayed active in the cultural debate space, doubling down earlier this year on his controversial stance regarding the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s inclusion of hip-hop artists. Rather than softening his position amid backlash, he used social media to reinforce his original argument, drawing renewed criticism from fans and fellow musicians alike, including Public Enemy’s Chuck D.

Outside of online sparring, Simmons has remained visible in more lighthearted public appearances as well. In mid-August, he and KISS bandmate Paul Stanley threw ceremonial first pitches at a Los Angeles Angels game. The appearance generated its own social media buzz when the team’s official X account poked fun at his extra throws in a joke referencing NFL quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Taken together, these moments paint a picture of a rock legend who remains as combative and outspoken online as he ever was on stage, unwilling to let criticism, however small, go unanswered.
