‘Gene Could’ve Cut My Head Off With The Bass,’ Bruce Kulick Recalls KISS Feud

Bruce Kulick, former KISS guitarist from the early ’80s to the late ’90s, recently took to X and shared the story of a prank that Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley pulled on him during the ‘Asylum’ tour. The guitarist recalled the prank with a True or False game for the fans.

Here’s how Bruce started to recall the prank:

“True: KISS Asylum tour live with me playing Gene Simmons Axe Bass.

False: I performed with his bass on stage (I only banged a few notes). Why? Keep reading…”

Bruce shared the moment he was left alone on stage by his former bandmates. He added:

“True: I was left alone on stage after my lead guitar solo. Gene and Paul did not come out when planned, and I totally freaked!

False: I handled it maturely.

True: I grabbed Gene’s bass out of anger, and it was a very odd moment I regret.”

Kulick included a photo of him with Gene’s bass and an angry expression on his face in his tweet. The guitarist then shared that he felt the need to explain the back story of that moment. He wrote:

“True: Peter Arquette (a serious collector and friend) took this photo.

False: I like explaining it every time someone asks! So now you know!”

The guitarist admitted that he regrets not going along with the prank on stage. So he said:

“Footnote, it was a prank on me and not meant to hurt me, but my insecurities did not let me enjoy it. I was never prepared for that situation, alone on a KISS stage off-script. Happily, Gene did not cut my head off with the bass!”

Many years have passed since the onstage incident, and this past spring, Bruce reunited with Simmons for a special performance in Las Vegas for the first time in three decades. The guitarist even shared footage from the show and wrote:

“‘Deuce’ with some KISS moves at the end (naturally)! Yesterday, the show for the KISS fans was so much fun for all!”
