The statement reflects the impact Hinds had on fellow musicians in the metal community. Butler’s tribute highlights the respect Hinds earned throughout his career as a member of the progressive metal band Mastodon.

Butler’s tribute comes as the metal community mourns the loss of one of its most innovative guitarists. Hinds’ influence extended far beyond his primary band, touching various corners of the music world through his diverse projects and collaborations.

Hinds served as the lead guitarist and one of the vocalists for Mastodon, a band that achieved critical acclaim through groundbreaking albums. Wikipedia reported that the band released critically acclaimed albums such as Leviathan (2004), Blood Mountain (2006), and Emperor of Sand (2017). The latter won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance.

Beyond his work with Mastodon, Hinds explored diverse musical territories throughout his career. Wikipedia documented that he contributed to projects like the surfabilly band Fiend Without a Face and other classic rock outfits including Giraffe Tongue Orchestra and Legend of the Seagullmen, showcasing his versatility as a musician.

His exceptional guitar skills earned recognition early in his career. TC Electronic noted that he, along with Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher, won the Metal Hammer Golden Gods award for Best Shredders in 2007, cementing his reputation as one of metal’s premier guitarists.

Despite facing personal struggles and a serious injury in 2007 that left him in a coma, Hinds remained a creative force within the band. Louder Sound revealed that he continued his work until his departure earlier in 2025. The departure was publicly described as amicable but reportedly caused him personal pain.
