Gary Holt recently issued a public apology to the late Jeff Hanneman after a misunderstanding regarding Hanneman’s wife’s presence at his memorial service. He shared his statement on Gary Holt’s Instagram Story.
The apology addressed confusion that arose from Holt’s mistaken belief that Hanneman’s wife was not present at the memorial service.
“My apologies to Jeff Hanneman for not knowing she was at the memorial,” Holt said. “I was far away, took the statement that was read as one done in her absence.”
Holt explained that his limited visibility at the event contributed to the misunderstanding. “Didn’t see many people that day,” he continued. “My apologies again.”
The guitarist’s public clarification came after realizing his error regarding the attendance at the memorial service for his late bandmate.

This heartfelt apology reflects the deep respect Holt has maintained for Hanneman throughout his career. This is particularly significant given their professional relationship that spanned over a decade.
Simple Wikipedia reported that Holt has been deeply involved in the thrash metal scene for over four decades. He is best known as the longtime guitarist for Exodus, which he joined in 1981. His connection to Slayer began when he filled in for Hanneman in 2011 following the latter’s illness. He eventually became his permanent successor while maintaining his commitment to Exodus.
Holt’s role in Slayer became more significant over time. Blabbermouth noted that he contributed guitar work on Slayer’s final album, Repentless (2015). This solidified his position as Hanneman’s successor and demonstrated his ability to honor the legacy while bringing his own style to the band.
The timing of this apology coincides with Holt’s recent reflections on his career. CBS San Francisco revealed that Holt recently published a memoir titled A Fabulous Disaster. In the book, he reflects on his extensive career, including his experiences touring and recording with both Exodus and Slayer, as well as his admiration for classic metal bands that influenced his style.
This background highlights Holt’s enduring presence in the metal community and the significance of his connection to Hanneman. It adds weight to his heartfelt public apology. The gesture demonstrates the respect and camaraderie that exists within the thrash metal community, even when misunderstandings occur.
