Extreme metal drummer Nick Barker has revealed he is seeking financial support due to his inability to tour following a diagnosis of kidney failure. The drummer shared his situation on Almorak.
Barker detailed the extent of his health condition and its impact on his career. He explained that the ongoing medical treatment prevents him from performing.
“Well, as many of you probably know, I went through kidney failure,” Barker said. “I’m stage five chronic kidney disease, which means my kidneys have totally failed and I have to have dialysis four times a week for four hours each time. And this is basically what is keeping me alive right now.”
He further elaborated on his current treatment and the hope for recovery.
“I’m on the transplant list, so I hope to get a new kidney sometime later this year,” he continued. “And this means that I cannot tour or make music or travel, because of my dialysis schedule. So, I have a GoFundMe page, which helps me, basically because I cannot earn any money because I can’t work anymore. So, it’s for fans to donate anything if they feel like it. And I appreciate all the help from everyone, and I hope to be back playing the drums very, very soon.”
Barker is currently undergoing dialysis and is on a transplant list. Barker’s career has spanned decades, featuring prominently in influential extreme metal bands such as Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. His distinctive drumming style has been a hallmark of the genre’s evolution.
This situation highlights the precarious financial realities faced by many musicians, particularly those in niche genres where touring is a primary source of income. Health crises can quickly derail careers and create significant financial hardship.
The demand for kidney transplants often outstrips supply, with waiting times varying significantly by region and blood type. Barker’s placement on the transplant list signifies a critical stage in his medical journey, offering a path towards improved health but with an uncertain timeline.
GoFundMe and similar crowdfunding platforms have become vital tools for artists and individuals facing medical emergencies or career disruptions. These platforms enable direct community support when traditional income streams are interrupted.
The extreme metal community is known for its strong sense of solidarity. Fans often rally around their favorite artists during difficult times, demonstrating a deep connection that extends beyond the music itself.
