In a recent interview with Goldmine Mag, The Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty shed light on the reasons for Eric Clapton’s departure from the band. According to McCarty, one of the main factors was Clapton’s inability to be a team player.

The Yardbirds were known for their innovative and experimental approach to music, which laid the groundwork for the future development of psychedelic rock and heavy metal. However, their success was not without its challenges, as evidenced by the departure of their most famous member, Eric Clapton.

Jim McCarty explained that Clapton had issues with some of the other band members and was more interested in pursuing a solo career than in recording hit records with the Yardbirds. McCarty goes on to say that the other band members were eager to record more hit records and advance their careers, but Clapton’s preference for blues-based music made it difficult to achieve this goal.

While the Yardbirds had enjoyed some success with their hit single ‘For Your Love,’ they knew that they needed to diversify their sound to remain relevant in the rapidly evolving music industry. Ultimately, the tension between Clapton and the rest of the band came to a head, and he decided to leave the Yardbirds to pursue other musical projects. Despite his departure, the Yardbirds continued to be a force in the music industry, with subsequent members including Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

When Jim was asked to clarify the reason behind Clapton’s departure, he explained:

“Yes, I think that was one of the reasons, but it was very complicated, really. Eric had issues with some of the other guys in the band, and to be honest, it became obvious that he wasn’t a team player. As we all know, Eric was much more of a solo player. And though he did go into other bands before he went solo, we really needed a hit record, and Eric wasn’t interested in that direction.

All the other bands, like The Beatles, The Kinks, The Animals, and the Stones, had hits. We wanted to record more big hits and advance our careers. We had ‘For Your Love,’ but most of what we had done was blues-based, and that’s where Eric wanted to live. Eventually, it all came to a head, and yes, that is part of why Eric left the Yardbirds.”

In retrospect, it’s clear that Eric Clapton’s departure from the Yardbirds was a turning point in his career, as he went on to achieve great success as a solo artist. However, it’s also a reminder that even the most talented musicians can struggle to work together as a team and that sometimes, it’s necessary to go your separate ways to achieve your goals.
