The backlash stemmed from Sammy Hagar sharing a photo from rehearsals for his now-canceled performance in Washington DC. The performance was part of the Freedom 250 event — a celebration of America’s birthday — which some fans interpreted as a political endorsement. Aaron responded with a passionate statement urging people to stop the criticism and see his father’s intentions clearly.

“Ok, enough with all this hate and bullshit people! What is wrong with you?” Aaron said. “I think it was pretty clear that Dad was using this platform to speak his mind and unify our country! He was not there for political reasons! I think we know what he meant!”

Aaron went on to express his frustration with those he felt were misrepresenting his father’s actions.

“I thought it came out perfectly clear, but once again the hate and opportunity that some people have taken to tear him down has angered me beyond words!” he continued. “I keep my peace and I am a VERY tolerant man, but enough is enough!! STOP IT!”

He urged the public to take a step back and reconsider their reactions.

“Take a minute and fact check yourselves, take a minute and look at the history, take a minute and just be kind!!” Aaron said. “It’s completely out of hand and now I’m taking this shit very personally! ENOUGH!!!”

Aaron closed his statement by sharing words his father had offered the family during these difficult times.

“THIS is what he was taking the opportunity to say!!! And that is as American, Patriotic and a people loving human being there can be!!” he said. “See the truth through all this online garbage!! Dad has always said to us through this mess: ‘I know it’s so hard right now to see any truth or kindness, don’t get discouraged, just be hopeful, it will all balance out in time.'”

Aaron’s defense came as Sammy Hagar himself had already stepped forward to address the controversy directly. He made clear that his involvement in the event was never about politics — and that the performance never even took place.

Hagar stated that his participation was “not a political thing.” His intention was to honor America’s 250th birthday rather than align himself with any political party or figure.

The performance was ultimately canceled by thunderstorms that made the outdoor venue unsafe on the day of the event. Hagar had prepared a handwritten speech focused on national unity that he never got the chance to deliver.

The Freedom 250 event was organized as part of a broader series of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. Hagar was one of several acts set to perform at the Washington DC gathering, which drew significant attention and sharp division in the days leading up to July 4th.

Despite the cancellation, the backlash continued online. Fans were split sharply over whether Hagar’s participation amounted to a political statement. Hagar maintained that the criticism reflected a fundamental misreading of his motives. He argued that celebrating 250 years of American freedom was something that transcended party lines entirely.

“This is not a political thing! This is the 250th birthday of our country,” Hagar wrote on Instagram. “Everyone should be celebrating.”
