Don Dokken recently faced criticism over his live vocal performance. A music fan posted video footage from a recent show on Arch City Vinyl, which sparked a debate among fans regarding the rock legend’s current stage abilities.

A fan who attended the show questioned whether Dokken’s performance was worth the ticket price. This prompted various reactions from the music community.

One commenter drew a comparison to another rock vocalist, suggesting that Dokken’s performance was “still not as bad as Vince Neil.”

While some fans agreed with the criticism and noted that the band “were great back in the day,” others defended Dokken’s efforts. One supporter acknowledged his ongoing health challenges and praised his commitment to performing, stating: “Don Dokken, even with his illness he is willing to work and to get it done. This is a great message for the youngest audience.”

The ongoing conversation among fans about aging rock performers and the expectations surrounding their live performances is highlighted by this discussion. However, Dokken’s recent vocal struggles are rooted in serious health complications that have significantly impacted his ability to perform at the level fans remember.

Don Dokken, now 71 years old, has experienced severe complications from neck and spinal surgeries. These complications have substantially limited his performing capabilities, according to 999 The Buzz. His right arm became nearly paralyzed following these procedures, preventing him from playing guitar—an instrument he has played since age 10. Beyond the physical paralysis, he has also struggled with vocal challenges and underwent vocal surgery earlier in 2025 to address voice issues.

Concert attendees have drawn particular criticism of Dokken’s recent vocal performances. One concert review from September 2025 noted that while the band sounded good overall, the reviewer felt embarrassed for Dokken, as reported by Ultimate Classic Rock. He “struggled to sing, hold the microphone, and walk,” with one attendee describing his voice as “horrible” and walking out after a few songs.

Dokken has been candid about the toll of his career when addressing these vocal complaints directly. He acknowledged that age and wear have affected his voice, comparing himself to an aging motorcycle engine, per Ultimate Classic Rock. After performing approximately 3,000 concerts throughout his career, vocal deterioration is inevitable with age. His response to critics was blunt: “If I can’t sing the way they remember me then just don’t come to the show.”

Dokken has continued touring through 2025 despite these health obstacles. He has performed at venues including The 80’s Cruise in March 2025 and casino shows in November 2025. However, retirement is imminent, as revealed to 999 The Buzz. Dokken stated he will “most likely play his final Dokken concert probably within the year.” He has decided after 50 years and 13 records that he has “written enough music” and expressed a desire to finally retire and enjoy his life rather than continue performing until he physically cannot.
