Dolly Parton Says Her Husband Thought She’d Failed Led Zeppelin

Dolly Parton recently sat down with Absolute Radio and shared that even though her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, is into Bluegrass music, he is not a fan of her first ‘Stairway To Heaven’ cover. Dolly explained:

“Carl [Thomas Dean] likes hard rock, and oddly enough, he loved Flatt & Scruggs; he liked certain Bluegrass songs. But he did not like it when I did a version of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ some years back as a Bluegrass kind of thing, and he didn’t think I should have done it, and he said, ‘Are you sure that’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ or ‘Stairway to Hell’? and I thought, ‘Well, maybe since you put it like that.'”

After Parton’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year, the country singer decided to work on a rock album called ‘Rockstar,’ which will be released this November. Dolly has collaborated with famous names like Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Elton John, and Sting, as well as her goddaughter Miley Cyrus for the upcoming album.

This new rock album will have 9 original and 21 covers tracks, and one of those covers is once again ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ which Dolly revealed during the interview that she purposely did close the original and the one that her husband prefers.

So when asked whether her husband straight out tells her when he doesn’t like a song or an album, Parton shared that her husband is always the first one to call her out. She said:

“He would be straight out; in fact, he’s the one when I said that I was going to sing ‘Stairway to Heaven’ back years ago as a country Bluegrass he said, ‘I don’t think you should do that, and I said, ‘Well, why?’ He said, ‘Because it’s a damn legend, it’s a classic, and nobody really would be brave enough to do that.’ So I said, ‘Well, you know me.'”

Dolly’s 2002 cover wasn’t Carl’s favorite; however the singer revealed that he liked the new version by adding:

“After he heard it, he said, ‘It’s okay’ to that version [2002], but he did love this version of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ because I stayed so true to it on this rock album.”
