Dire Straits guitarist Mike Knopfler chose his top three guitars to count as his holy trinity.
Appearing in the new video of Christie’s Inc., the guitarist talked about all the favorite guitars he has used during his career and picked three favorites. Although it wasn’t his first guitar, Knopfler had been looking for a certain guitar for a long time. He revealed:
“I was on the hunt for a Les Paul for years. First of all, I could never afford one for a long time. The one that Rudy sold to me that got in the ‘Brothers In Arms’ album, and it was my first time I really came to grips with a Les Paul. I’d been listening to Peter Green and Eric [Clapton] and all those guys. So it was an ambition to be able to pick up a guitar like that.”
The rocker has stated his love for Stratocaster guitars and continued:
“Again, you know the same romance with the strats I had with Les Pauls, and I still do. I never wanted to see myself as a collector at all. But there comes a point where you realize what a thing you’ve taken on. A lot of guitars came into my possession were actually given to me by people, so they come for all kinds of reasons.”
During the conversation, the rocker picked up the acoustic that is now his signature guitar. While playing, he revealed his top three guitars:
“The Martin signatures, this is just nice to play. Something like this is just a pleasure to become friendly with to have it around. I never thought that my signature would be on anything, never mind the Gibsons, Fenders, and Martins. They’re the father, the son, and the holy ghost of guitars.”
Knopfler’s First Guitar That Started Everything

Starting his career in the 60s, the rocker used a red Höfner Super Solid as his first guitar. He was highly inspired by Hank Marvin’s sound, thus nagging his father constantly until he got his first-ever guitar to be a red Fender Stratocaster. Although it was not a Fender strat, in his words, it was the closest his ‘poor old dad’ could get.
The rocker’s love for Stratocasters was not gone after receiving his first guitar. Years later, he bought himself that red Stratocaster, and surprisingly, he still uses it.
