Desmond Child Recalls David Lee Roth Sabotaging Eddie Van Halen’s Collab

Desmond Child recently sat down with Paltrocast to chat about his relationship with David Lee Roth and how he interrupted a writing session with Eddie Van Halen. The songwriter recalled what transpired between him and Roth the first time they met.

Child shared Roth’s introduction which consisted of a show. He explained:

“It was two strippers in spike heels, overcoats like spies, and fedoras black hats. So you know pretty soon the hats went off, the coats went off. I don’t think the heels ever came off, but they were like writhing on the floor like a couple of snakes, and it was like what?”

However, a few years later, Roth wrote in his book that he didn’t want Van Halen to write with Child. The songwriter explained how his plans of writing with Eddie were ruined by sharing:

“After our meeting, he never called me back and so fine, you know, whatever, and then I got asked to try going to write a song with Eddie and the guys in the band. Guess who drives up there almost like he knew the session was happening? David Lee Roth, in a convertible.”

After Roth’s unexpected visit, they weren’t able to create a track together. Desmond also shared why he wanted to stay out of it. He said:

“He like drives up, and we were sort of like all getting it together to go into the house or into the studio to write up at the house. He all of a sudden is like there in the middle of it all, and the fact is that we couldn’t have our session, so he came to bust it up. So it’s like, ‘Okay, well, why don’t we all write together?’ I thought… Well, I wasn’t about to get involved in a sibling squabble, so I just left.”

Talking about books, Desmond is gearing up to release his first memoir, ‘Livin’ On a Prayer: Big Songs Big Life’ which will hit the shelves on September 19th. Child will go into detail about his childhood, his journey navigating the music industry as well as his biggest hits.
