Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine recently shared his thoughts on the future of metal’s “Big Four” and the possibility of passing the torch to a new generation, in comments reported by Loudwire.

The legendary guitarist reflected on the concept of legitimately passing musical leadership to younger artists. He drew parallels to a memorable moment he witnessed between established rock bands.

“I saw this thing a long time ago, where The Police were playing someplace [at Giants Stadium in New Jersey]… And they took their instruments off and handed it to the guys in U2. And it was really a legitimate passing of the torch,” Mustaine said.

The Megadeth frontman then addressed the current state of metal. He questioned whether there are enough worthy successors to form a new Big Four.

“And, you know, I don’t know who, if that time comes where I take my guitar off and I hand it to someone else, who that would be, but I think the time’s come for… You know, for there to be a new generation of Big Four members,” he continued. “I see a lot of bands that are out there, and a lot of them are really good, but are there four? I don’t know.”

These comments come as Megadeth has announced their farewell tour. This marks a significant moment in metal history.

Mustaine’s reflections on succession carry particular weight given his own journey to metal prominence. American Songwriter reported that Mustaine was the lead guitarist for Metallica for only a few years before forming Megadeth in 1983 after being dismissed from the band.

The band has demonstrated remarkable longevity and resilience throughout its four-decade career. Metal Injection noted that Mustaine has released 16 albums with Megadeth, with their most recent being “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!” in 2022. The band has undergone numerous member changes throughout its history.

Megadeth’s position as one of the original Big Four thrash metal bands alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax has been cemented through decades of influential releases and performances. The band’s journey has not been without challenges. Mustaine once disbanded Megadeth in 2002 due to a left arm nerve injury. He reformed it in 2004 after rehabilitation.

The question of who might constitute a new generation of metal’s elite remains open. Mustaine’s comments suggest that while many talented bands exist today, finding four that could match the cultural impact and musical influence of the original Big Four may prove challenging. His uncertainty reflects the unique circumstances that allowed the original quartet to rise to prominence during thrash metal’s formative years in the 1980s.
