Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine recently opened up about his decision to postpone surgery for his hand injury. He shared his reasoning in an interview with MariskalRockTV.

The guitarist addressed concerns about his hand condition. He explained his strategic approach to potential surgical intervention.

When asked if he has contemplated undergoing surgery to correct the issue with his hand, Mustaine said: “I’m gonna wait for that until I’m ready to try it, because if I try it now and I’m 95 percent, and I do a surgery and it sets me back, that would’ve been a bad decision. If I wait until my hands are causing a problem and I try it and it doesn’t work, well then I’ve toured everywhere, I’ve said farewell to everybody and I’m not leaving stuff unsaid or unfinished.”

Mustaine also provided specific details about his medical condition and its impact on his playing ability.

“You can look right here on this hand. There’s a line right there that’s sticking up. That’s something called Dupuytren’s contracture, and it’s gonna make my finger come down like this. It’s already started, where it’s kind of bunching up a little bit,” he explained. “And then if you look at the tips of my fingers, they’re severely arthritic. So, all those bumps makes it really painful to play.”

The condition appears to be progressively affecting the legendary guitarist’s ability to perform. He continues to tour with Megadeth despite these challenges.

This latest health challenge adds to a history of hand-related issues that have threatened Mustaine’s career. The guitarist’s cautious approach to surgery stems from past experiences with serious injuries that nearly ended his musical journey.

Wikipedia reported that in 2002, Mustaine suffered severe radial neuropathy—known as Saturday Night Palsy—from falling asleep with his left arm over a chair during rehab. The injury left him unable to make a fist. It forced Megadeth to disband temporarily. The nerve damage was so severe that doctors initially told him he might never play guitar again.

The recovery process required intense physical therapy and determination. Mustaine had to completely relearn how to play guitar. He started from basic exercises and gradually rebuilt his technique. The experience taught him the value of patience when dealing with hand injuries. This likely influences his current decision to delay surgery.

Despite these physical challenges, Mustaine has maintained his commitment to physical discipline in other areas. IMDb noted that the Megadeth frontman has earned a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. This demonstrates his dedication to staying physically active even while managing chronic hand conditions.

The guitarist’s current approach reflects lessons learned from his previous injury. Rather than rushing into surgical intervention, he’s choosing to continue performing while he still can. This ensures that fans won’t be left with unfinished business should the surgery not go as planned.
