Dave Mustaine has achieved a significant milestone in his martial arts journey, earning his black belt in Jiu-Jitsu at 64 years old. Trainer Reginaldo Almeida of the Renzo Gracie academy announced the achievement on Instagram.

Almeida highlighted the dedication and perseverance demonstrated by Mustaine and five other recipients of the black belt promotion. The trainer emphasized that the achievement reflects more than technical skill.

“Today wasn’t just a belt promotion… it was a day that touched my heart,” Almeida said. “Watching these six men earn their Black Belts was emotional for me — because I know their stories, their struggles, their sacrifices, and everything they had to overcome to stand on those mats today.”

Almeida reflected on the personal qualities that define a black belt holder. He noted the importance of consistency and character over natural talent.

“Each one of them showed up on days when life was heavy…on days when they were tired…on days when quitting would’ve been easier. But they kept going. That’s what makes a Black Belt. Not talent. Not strength. Heart. Consistency. Humility.”

This achievement represents a remarkable chapter in Mustaine’s long and dedicated martial arts career. His training spans multiple disciplines and decades of practice.

Mustaine trained at the Renzo Gracie TN academy in Tennessee, near his hometown of Franklin, according to Consequence. His journey with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began years earlier when he received his purple belt from the same academy in 2021, shortly after overcoming throat cancer. He subsequently advanced to brown belt before earning his black belt promotion in December 2025.

The Megadeth frontman’s martial arts background extends well beyond Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Blabbermouth reported that Mustaine holds a second-degree black belt in Songham Taekwondo. He trained extensively in Ukidokan karate under legendary martial artist Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, incorporating karate, kung fu, aikido, judo, jiu-jitsu, taekwondo, wrestling, Muay Thai, and boxing into his practice. Mustaine began his taekwondo training in 1999 in Arizona, following earlier kung fu practice. He relocated to Nashville in 2014 to continue his martial arts pursuits.

Achieving a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu denotes expert technical and practical skill, as noted by BJJEE. This typically requires thousands of hours of training and dedication. Mustaine’s promotion stands as a testament to his commitment to personal growth and discipline, qualities that have defined both his music career and his martial arts journey.

Almeida expressed pride in Mustaine and his fellow recipients—Kyle, George, Ken, Michael, and Jordan. He recognized their growth as athletes and individuals within the academy. This achievement comes as Mustaine prepares for significant milestones with Megadeth. The band’s final album releases in January 2026, and a farewell tour begins in February 2026.
