Dave Mustaine recently addressed concerns about Megadeth’s farewell tour duration and the possibility of hiring someone to play his parts. He discussed how his ongoing health condition could impact the band’s ability to complete their planned performances. The Megadeth frontman shared his thoughts in a statement to SiriusXM radio personality Jose Mangin.
Mustaine spoke candidly about his battle with Dupuytren contracture. He explained how the progressive condition affects his ability to perform.
“I don’t know, honestly, because the condition of my hand is, right now I can still play, but it’s progressing,” Mustaine said. “So, I don’t know about that part. As far as us being willing to play, I’ll play as long as I can, and I hope it’s a while.”
The guitarist also revealed his thoughts about potentially having someone else fill in for him during performances.
“The crazy thing [is] I’ve been thinking about what would I do if we had a tour booked and I just couldn’t play anymore and I had to ask somebody to play for me, what that would be like,” he continued. “And I didn’t like the idea. It’s not me. And I’m gonna play until the last second, and when I can’t, that’s when I’m gonna stop.”
This statement indicates that Megadeth’s farewell tour timeline remains uncertain. The timeline depends entirely on Mustaine’s physical condition and ability to perform.
The farewell tour comes as Megadeth prepares to close a legendary chapter in metal history. Rogers Place reported that the tour supports Megadeth’s self-titled final studio album, set for release on January 23, 2026. This marks the end of their recording career with no more studio albums planned.
The extensive farewell tour spans multiple continents throughout 2026. Rogers Place confirmed that Canadian dates kick off February 15 in Victoria, BC and wrap March 6 in Quebec City, QC. The band has also confirmed European dates. Spanish venues announced shows scheduled for May 2026, including performances on May 25 in Valencia at Roig Arena, May 27 in A Coruña at the Coliseum, and May 29 in Bilbao.
Metal Injection revealed that additional European dates start June 7 at the Amphitheater in Gelsenkirchen, Germany and wrap up June 28 at Spartak Stadium in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The comprehensive tour schedule demonstrates the band’s commitment to reaching fans across multiple regions during their final run.
Mustaine has been definitive about the band’s retirement plans. Parade noted that the frontman confirmed no return after retirement is planned. He has mentioned the possibility of a live album following the tour’s conclusion.
The uncertainty surrounding Mustaine’s health condition adds an element of unpredictability to what was already planned as Megadeth’s final chapter. This potentially makes each performance even more significant for longtime fans of the thrash metal pioneers.
