Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl recently revealed how the new Wicked movie forced him to change his band’s upcoming album title. He shared his frustration in an interview with Radio X.

Grohl explained how he originally planned to name the album “For Good” after one of the songs. He had to abandon the idea when the Wicked movie was released with a similar title.

“Actually, you know what I wanted to call the record? I wanted to call the record For Good, because that song Your Favourite Toy, at first I called it For Good,” Grohl said. “In that song, Your Favorite Toy, it says, ‘Get back, hear that boy, someone threw away your favorite toy for good.'”

The musician described his initial enthusiasm for the title and how it would have worked on multiple levels for the album.

“And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a good not only title for the song, but also for the album.’ They could have more than a few meanings, but I’m like, ‘That’s kind of nice – For Good,'” he continued. “And then that Wicked movie came out, and it’s called Wicked: For Good. And I was so pissed! So, then I changed the title of the song, and then it just became the title of the album.”

The album is now titled “Favorite Toy” following Grohl’s decision to avoid any confusion with the popular musical film adaptation.

Grohl’s timing concerns were understandable given the massive success of the Wicked film franchise. The franchise has dominated both box office and cultural conversations over the past year.

The original Wicked film became a cultural phenomenon after its release in November 2024. The official Wicked movie website reported that the first film earned 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. It won Oscars for Costume Design. The film’s success immediately set the stage for heightened anticipation around its sequel.

The sequel that caused Grohl’s title dilemma, Wicked: For Good, has proven equally successful in the marketplace. Wikipedia documented that Wicked: For Good premiered at the Suhai Music Hall in São Paulo on November 4, 2025. It was released in the United States on November 21, 2025. The film has already grossed $540 million worldwide, demonstrating the franchise’s continued commercial appeal.

The release strategy for Wicked: For Good also showed the studio’s confidence in the property. Wikipedia noted that the sequel was moved up from later dates including November 26 and December 25, 2025. This change helped avoid competition with major releases like Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash. This strategic positioning likely contributed to the film’s strong box office performance.

For Grohl and the Foo Fighters, the title change represents more than just avoiding confusion with a popular movie. The shift from “For Good” to “Favorite Toy” maintains the personal meaning behind the original concept while establishing a distinct identity for the band’s latest work. The album title now directly references the central track that inspired Grohl’s original naming idea. This creates a more direct connection between the album’s identity and its musical content.
