Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl recently talked about the firing of former drummer Josh Freese and shared a new explanation behind the band’s decision to part ways with him, The Irish Times reported.

Grohl’s comments focused on the importance of musical chemistry and feel when playing with different drummers.

“A drummer’s playing is based on feel. That’s all drumming is: feel,” Grohl said. “It’s hard to define when you’re playing with someone and it feels ‘right,’ or when you’re playing with someone who feels ‘really good,’ and then you’re playing with someone and it feels ‘f*cking amazing.'”

The frontman elaborated on what creates the right musical connection between band members.

“It’s personality, it’s your connection, your rhythm that you have together,” he continued. “It’s just a combination, or a recipe – when you’re cooking something and it says, ‘Salt and pepper to taste’ at the end of the recipe; that’s defined by you. We know what feels best for our band.”

Grohl’s latest comments provide additional insight into a departure that has remained largely shrouded in mystery since it occurred in 2023.

Music Radar revealed that Freese had joined as a touring drummer after Taylor Hawkins’ sudden death in 2022. Bassist Nate Mendel praised him for stepping in and delivering musically what the band needed. Freese’s arrival came during one of the most challenging periods in the band’s history. The band grappled with the loss of their longtime drummer.

However, the collaboration was short-lived. Mendel previously noted that the vague reasons for Freese’s 2023 exit were deliberate. He explained that going into “the personal details of why that didn’t necessarily sync up just didn’t seem like it was going to benefit anybody,” Music Radar documented. The bassist emphasized that the decision wasn’t best for all parties involved.

Freese is a prolific session drummer who has played with Nine Inch Nails, The Offspring, and dozens of other notable acts throughout his career. He reportedly expressed shock on the day he was let go, Music Radar noted. His extensive resume and reputation as a reliable touring musician made the sudden departure all the more surprising to industry observers.

The band’s emphasis on musical chemistry and personal connection reflects their approach to finding the right fit following Hawkins’ death. Grohl’s latest explanation suggests that while technical proficiency is important, the intangible elements of musical partnership ultimately determine success within the Foo Fighters’ dynamic.
