Dave Grohl recently provided an update on Pat Smear’s return to Foo Fighters. He addressed the guitarist’s injury and recovery timeline in an interview with Absolute Radio.

The Foo Fighters frontman discussed Smear’s unusual gardening accident and his expected return to touring with the band.

“Pat’s doing well. I think he’s looking forward to coming back on the road with us. He broke his leg. Gardening,” Grohl said. “He was, I think, pulling weeds and having to step over a low fence, like maybe a dog fence, and he got his leg caught in the fence and fell and snapped his leg.”

Grohl also revealed discussions about accommodating Smear’s recovery during upcoming shows.

“We talked about [getting my throne out for the shows]. I don’t think he wanted to use the throne. He was sending me pictures of like tiki bars where you could sort of like prop up on a stool and drink like fruity cocktails,” he continued. “So, but I think by the time we start hitting the road, he’ll be up to speed. He’ll be good.”

The update comes as Foo Fighters continue to navigate recent changes within the band. They are maintaining their touring schedule despite these adjustments.

Smear’s absence has been noticeable during recent performances. JamBase reported that the guitarist sat out the band’s live performance of new song “Your Favorite Toy” on the Graham Norton Show while recovering from his foot injury. Jason Falkner stepped in to fill Smear’s position during the television appearance.

The band has been dealing with multiple lineup adjustments recently. KLEW-TV revealed that Foo Fighters spent months debating Josh Freese’s future with the band before ultimately making the decision to part ways with the drummer last summer. The dismissal was described as a group decision aimed at taking the band in a new direction.

These personnel changes highlight the ongoing evolution within Foo Fighters as they continue to adapt their lineup. They maintain their commitment to live performances despite these challenges. The band’s ability to bring in temporary replacements like Falkner demonstrates their dedication to fulfilling their performance obligations despite member injuries and other challenges.

The update suggests Smear will be ready to return to full touring duties when Foo Fighters resume their live performances. This provides stability to the band’s guitar section as they move forward with their touring plans.
