Cradle of Filth is a band that instantly springs to mind when discussing longevity in the metal scene. In a recent interview with Decibel Magazine, Dani Filth opened up about the challenges that come with maintaining originality in a genre that’s constantly evolving.

This iconic band has continually pushed boundaries, experimented with their sound, and remained relevant for decades. Their enduring presence in the metal world is largely due to the creative drive of frontman Dani Filth, who has always strived to keep their music fresh and original.

In his chat, Filth mentioned that part of the struggle with originality is the fact that other bands might emulate their ideas, making it difficult for them to push the envelope further. This feeling of being copied, or simply having a concept that’s already been done, can be disheartening, but the singer remains undeterred.

He emphasized that the challenge of creating original music is part of what makes it worthwhile and that if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. In Filth’s eyes, the constant battle to create something new is a natural part of being a musician. It’s never easy, but it’s also never unnatural. This drive to innovate and persevere is deeply ingrained in the band’s DNA, which has undoubtedly contributed to their long-lasting success in the metal scene.

When asked about the most challenging thing about making music at this point of his career, the frontman replied:

“I guess it is, and it’s not only just that. Other people emulate what you do as well, so if you have other vestiges of ideas simmering from stuff you’ve already done, sometimes you find it being taken over by other people. I’ve found that several times when I started to write a record, like somebody else has done this.

It’s hard to be original; it gets harder and harder. Everything’s a challenge, everybody would be doing it if it was easy to do, but it’s in our blood, it’s our nature, it’s our job. It doesn’t come easy, but it’s not unnatural.”

Even with their impressive back catalog, Cradle of Filth continues to push themselves creatively. Their upcoming live album, ‘Trouble and Their Double Lives,’ arrives on April 28. This record, captured between 2014 and 2019, features performances from various shows across the U.S., Europe, Australia, and more during their Cryptoriana world tour. Fans will no doubt be eager to get their hands on this long-awaited live offering, showcasing the band’s energy and passion in a live setting.
