In a new interview with NME, Spiritbox singer Courtney LaPlante talked about their Grammy nomination and Gojira’s win.

“All of us would have liked to have won, but we all were rooting for Gojira,” she admitted. “We were standing in line with all of them and they’re so humble and nice. Whenever I do an impression of them I go like this and they’re like, ‘No you’re going to win, f*ck us, we’re not going to win.’ We were just like, ‘Guys, you opened the Olympic ceremony on a castle with blood raining down. You’re winning this Grammy.'”

The singer recalled the exact moment Gojira won the Grammy. “I think that they are so humble like they sat so far in the back. We were like, ‘Go down there,’ and they were like, ‘No we want to sit with our family.’ I was like, ‘All right, well, you’re going to maybe miss your speech.’ Sure enough, they won and they had to sprint down. They almost missed it they took the Grammy away. and they were like, ‘No, no.'”

LaPlante also mentioned Gojira’s speech about supporting smaller bands. “I thought it was really cool because they used that time to be like, ‘You need to support smaller bands and support your local bands. You need to do that or bands like us aren’t going to be up here.’ So I thought that was really cool.”

After losing to Gojira during the Grammys, the singer didn’t seem to get upset because they lost. Instead, she celebrated Gojira’s victory with a picture with bandmate Mike Stringer on their social media, both smiling. The caption of the photo read, “We lost to Gojira.”

She also shared her excitement, “30 years as a band, no member changes, opened the Olympic ceremony in their home country….no one deserves it more!”

Gojira received the award for their performance of ‘Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira!)‘ they played at the Olympic Games opening ceremony last year. The band competed against Judas Priest’s ‘Crown of Horns,’ Metallica’s ‘Screaming Suicide,’ Knocked Loose ft. Poppy’s ‘Suffocate,’ and Spiritbox’s ‘Cellar Door.’

This is Gojira’s first Grammy win after four nominations. They previously lost in 2017 and 2021 to Cage The Elephant, Megadeth, and Dream Theater.
