In a new interview with Rolling Stone for their January 2025 cover, Chris Martin addressed Coldplay’s shift to pop.
Since their debut album ‘Parachutes’ in 2000, Coldplay has faced a lot of criticism. Martin now said he’s fine with not being loved by everyone. The frontman explained, “It would be terrible if we lived in a society where everyone had to [like the same thing].”
He added, “We’re a very, very easy, safe target. We’re not going to bite back. We are four white, middle-class men from England. We deserve to take some sh*t for what our people have done. There’s a reason we get to play all around the world, and part of it is not necessarily very healthy.”
Martin also shared how he handles criticism, saying, “When I’m saying these things about world peace, I’m also talking about my own inside.”
“It’s a daily thing not to hate yourself,” the singer continued. “Forget about outside critics – it’s the inside ones, too. That’s really our mission right now: We are consciously trying to fly the flag for love being an approach to all things.”
People have also discussed why Coldplay has received so much on various platforms like Reddit. A fan wrote, “I don’t hate them, I’m just disappointed.. ‘Parachutes’, ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’ and even ‘X&Y’ / ‘Viva La Vida’ were full of promise. They just gotten worse and worse over time, shallower, repetitive, lowest common denominator, cookie cutter aiming for a mass pop stadium appeal.”
They continued, “They started off as Radiohead fans, Chris Martin would quote Thom Yorke and Radiohead songs on interviews… then grew up to show what Radiohead would sound like if they’d lean into Creep and High & Dry instead of trying to expand and experiment.”
Another fan shared, “I loved their first few albums and as they evolved – which is totally their prerogative to do as artists – I just didn’t enjoy the new stuff much anymore.
“They had an interesting alt-rock/pop sound with thoughtful lyrics, and I loved that a lot of their songs almost felt like lullabies (at least to me). I sing ‘Amsterdam,’ ‘Swallowed in the Sea,’ ‘The Scientist,’ and ‘Green Eyes’ to my daughter all the time to help her fall asleep,” they noted.
The fan stated, “The newer past several albums have a bigger scope and more electronic influence and sound, which is cool, but for people who fell in love with the original sound and vibe it can be disappointing to not get more of that.”
Coldplay’s first four shows in 2025 will be in Abu Dhabi. The band is set to perform at Zayed Sports City Stadium on January 9, 11, 12 and 14.
