Signing for a partnership with Dark Horse Records recently, Cat Stevens freshly recorded George Harrison’s ‘Here Comes the Sun.’ While talking about the song and its original creator in a statement reported by Spin, Stevens indicated that George Harrison was at an extraordinary spiritual level.
It is known that each Beatles member impacted several names from the industry. One of these names is Cat Stevens, whose music was influenced by George Harrison. But apparently, it was not the only thing Stevens was affected by.
The musician stated that he saw music as ‘the key to something much higher,’ like the Beatles’ guitarist. He added that Harrison ‘transcended to levels not many people ever get to experience,’ which was reflected in his songs. Stevens appreciates the fact that Harrison was one of the first artists to hold concerts for people in need and claims to be proud of singing his song ‘Here Comes the Sun,’ which holds a light to George Harrison’s perception of hope in a dark world.
The musician’s expressions followed:
“While most of my generation were just into the music, I was a bit like George, where music became the key to something much higher. Following the rages of the ’60s, his consciousness was awakened, and George transcended to levels not many people ever get to experience. You can hear it in his lyrics, and see it in the way he lived and dealt with the material world — looking for a way out. George was one of the first to put on a charity concert for the poor, at [a] time [when] millions of Bangladeshis were fleeing from conflict and becoming refugees. It was a brave thing to do, and against all establishment rules. I’m happy to sing one of his songs, especially as it represents the returning of light and hope to a seriously dark and broken world.”
Cat Stevens’ cover of ‘Here Comes the Sun’ precedes a new album with Dark Horse which George Harrison founded. Appreciating the guitarist’s positive influence on his life through his actions and songs, Stevens seems to think Harrison put himself at a spiritually different point and used his music to express it. He is apparently eager to carry on his legacy.
