Bruce Hall recently addressed fan concerns about performing alongside Kevin Cronin. He clarified the nature of their upcoming appearance together in a statement shared on Facebook.

The statement came in response to fan criticism about the band members reuniting after fans had boycotted tours in support of Hall.

An REO fan commented on Hall’s post, saying, “We literally boycotted our favorite band’s summer tour (Styx) for you because of what Kevin did to you… And now we are supposed to support him again? I’m good.”

“This isn’t REO reuniting to tour,” Hall said in his response. “This is an event for the university that Alan, Neal, and I confirmed to play in June. Kevin confirmed literally 3 days ago.”

Hall acknowledged the complexity of the situation while explaining his position on the matter.

“While we haven’t spoken in over a year, me trying to block his participation in an REO performance would be hypocritical,” he continued. “That being said, I personally can’t thank you all enough for your love and support.”

The upcoming University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Homecoming performance represents a significant moment for the band. It brings together members who haven’t shared the stage in years due to internal conflicts.

Ultimate Classic Rock reported that this will mark the band’s return to their roots as they lead this year’s Illinois Homecoming Parade on September 26, 2025. They will act as grand marshals and collaborate on a one-of-a-kind halftime show with the Marching Illini featuring a medley of REO Speedwagon’s hit songs. The performance holds special significance as the University of Illinois is where the band originally formed in 1967.

The reunion brings together founding members Neal Doughty (keyboardist) and Alan Gratzer (drummer) alongside Hall and Cronin. Rock and Roll Globe noted this underscores the significance of this rare gathering of the original lineup. This marks a notable departure from the band’s recent history, as they had been performing with different lineups following various member changes over the decades.

The special appearance follows a turbulent period for the band. The Music Universe revealed that REO Speedwagon ceased touring earlier in 2025 due to irreconcilable differences between Hall and Cronin regarding Hall’s back surgery recovery and readiness to perform. The split had left fans divided and uncertain about the band’s future.

“I’m honored by the invitation and the opportunity to reunite for this special university event,” Cronin stated. He acknowledged the rarity and importance of this gathering after many years apart from his former bandmates.
