Brent Hinds Admits AC/DC’s Influence On Mastodon While Recalling His Weird Encounter With Angus Young
Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds opened about his influences when it comes to playing guitar during an interview with Beyond the Thunder, and revealed that one of his biggest inspirations was AC/DC guitarist Angus Young with whom he met during an award show and Young’s reaction was hilarious while speaking about the similarities between his guitar playing and Young’s.
As you might know, there are many fans who think some of Mastodon’s songs such as ‘The Czar’ and ‘Crack the Skye’ has a quite similar guitar style to AC/DC guitarist Angus Young’s despite the fact that the band’s songs overall does not sound like those of AC/DC’s at all.
During a recent interview with Beyond the Thunder, Brent Hinds was asked about that similarity and he revealed that Angus Young was one of the first guitar players that he was deeply influenced by due to the simplicity of his style which helped Hinds when he first started playing.
Here is what Hinds said:
“Yeah, I mean, Angus is one of the first guitar players that I was really influenced by. When I heard other guitar players at the same time, they were doing stuff that was too complicated-sounding.
I was like, ‘Man, I don’t like that, that sounds like garbage.’ When I first started actually learning how to play the guitar, I was playing blues riffs and stuff.
They’re easy, so that’s like a good way to start out for anyone. I’m sure Angus probably started the same way – I heard his brother was a big influence on him.”
When asked if he met any of the members of AC/DC, Brent Hinds revealed that he tried communicating with Angus Young once they were at an award show and when he praised Young, explaining how he was inspired by him, Young used an Aussie expression which made no sense to Hinds apparently.
Here is what he said:
“I tried to talk to Angus Young one time, and it was at this award show. I just walked over to him and said, ‘Man, thank you for your guitar playing because you really influenced me as a guitar player,’ and, ‘You’re the reason why I’m at this award show right now – because you inspired me to play guitar to the point to I’m here at the award shows sitting next to you.’
And he was like, ‘Quit pissin’ in my pocket!’ He told me to quit pissing in his pocket. I was like, ‘Alright man, whatever – later.'”
