The Killers took to Twitter to apologize to their fans after lead singer Brandon Flowers invited a Russian drummer to play with them during their recent show in Georgia. Flowers’ words to the crowd encouraging them to be ‘brother and sister’ with Russians sparked more protest as most of the crowd left the concert.
Here’s what The Killers wrote on Twitter for fans after the show:
“Good people of Georgia, it was never our intention to offend anyone! We have a longstanding tradition of inviting people to play drums and it seemed from the stage that the initial response from the crowd indicated that they were okay with tonight’s audience participation member coming onstage with us.”
Although Flowers’ intention was not to offend the band’s Georgian fans, they also wrote:
“We recognize that a comment, meant to suggest that all of The Killers’ audience and fans are ‘brothers and sisters,’ could be misconstrued. We did not mean to upset anyone and we apologize. We stand with you and hope to return soon.”
Considering the former Soviet state was invaded by Russia in 2008 and they continue to occupy 20% of Georgian territory the frontman’s words were not taken lightly on Twitter. A media outlet called ‘Visioner’ tweeted:
“The people of Georgia once again voiced their honest opinion. Russians will never be comfortable in this country, because we are their enemies, not their brothers and sisters. F*ck off The Killers. “
