Black Veil Brides frontman Andy Biersack recently opened up about the struggles he’s faced since starting the band. He shared his thoughts in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The statement focused on the band’s new song “Vindicate” and the personal experiences that inspired its creation.
“Our new song ‘Vindicate’ comes out tomorrow, I view this song as a means of conveying the themes of the album right at the top,” Biersack said. “Each song on the record represents a different way we fight with the feelings of revenge and getting even, sometimes with others, sometimes with ourselves, our past, something someone else did to us etc.”
The frontman revealed the deeply personal inspiration behind the track. He connected it to his early experiences in the music scene.
“This song above all else was lyrically inspired by the chip I’ve had on my shoulder since I was 16 years old and started this band,” he continued. “I was immediately torn down and sneered at by my peers within the ‘scene’ and those around me and to this day this band and our fans have always had to fight through that to one degree or another.”
Biersack expanded on the song’s broader message about perseverance and ambition.
“Beyond that though I find that it’s representative of every one of us who have to deal with someone attempting to destroy our ambitions simply because they do not possess the skills or wherewithal to make their own dreams come true,” he said. “All of us are born with a fire and a belief in ourselves, often times though the world around us will try to stamp it out. This is a song about never letting them drag you down.”
The singer concluded with gratitude toward the band’s supporters.
“If you are a fan of what we do, you have given me more than you could ever imagine and I thank you ardently and sincerely for allowing me the opportunity to do this for all of these years,” Biersack said. “I hope you enjoy Vindicate!”
Biersack’s candid reflection on his journey highlights the ongoing challenges that Black Veil Brides has faced throughout their career. The band particularly struggled with criticism and resistance they encountered from within the rock and metal community.
Black Veil Brides formed in 2006 when Biersack was just a teenager with ambitious dreams of creating theatrical rock music. The band quickly gained attention for their dramatic aesthetic, combining elements of glam rock, gothic imagery, and heavy metal sounds. However, this unique approach also made them targets for criticism from purists within the metal scene who questioned their authenticity and musical credibility.
The band’s rise to prominence came during a time when the rock and metal scenes were experiencing significant changes. Traditional gatekeepers were often resistant to newer acts that blended genres or incorporated theatrical elements. Black Veil Brides faced particular scrutiny for their visual presentation and their appeal to younger audiences. This led to the kind of peer rejection that Biersack references in his statement about “Vindicate.”
Despite the early criticism, Black Veil Brides has maintained a dedicated fanbase and continued to evolve their sound over nearly two decades. The band has released multiple studio albums and has toured extensively, proving their staying power in an industry that initially dismissed them. Biersack’s latest comments suggest that the experiences of overcoming adversity and proving doubters wrong continue to fuel the band’s creative output.
The themes of vindication and perseverance that Biersack describes in relation to the new song reflect a broader narrative that has defined much of Black Veil Brides’ career trajectory. The band faced early rejection but built a sustainable career in rock music. Their story exemplifies the resilience required to succeed in the face of industry skepticism and peer pressure.
