Almost every artist starts their music career hoping to be a renowned star one day. However, it seems like Billy Idol believed his journey in the industry wouldn’t last long when he began making music. During his recent Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, Idol revealed he could’ve never imagined becoming an icon in the scene.

“It really is crazy to find myself getting an award like this or being honored this way,” said the singer during his speech. “I mean, 47 years of doing this after I started in Generation X and 35 years after coming here, I just really could never have imagined anything like this.”

Idol looked back on his music career, recalling, “Initially, we made the music back in the mid-’70s during the punk-rock time. There wasn’t much hope or anything. We decided if there’s nothing, there’s no future; we’ll do what we love. And that’s what I did. I did the music because I loved it. It wasn’t for any other reason, really.”

Admitting he believed his stardom would be temporary, Billy continued, “Anyway, I didn’t really think doing this would last very long. We thought maybe six months, maybe a year, maybe two years. I could never have imagined something like this. It’s just incredible.”

“I always dreamed of a life in music or a life in the arts,” he added, “but you really [don’t] know if you could ever really do that. There’s a lot of people telling you ‘Don’t try,’ but that was what was great about the people around us back then; they were telling you to try.”

Recently, Billy Idol received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His longtime friend and collaborator Steve Stevens, Shepard Fairey, and Black Flag’s Henry Rollins attended the ceremony. As it turns out, Idol had no idea he would be a punk rock icon back when he started his music career, but he is now here with a star on the Walk of Fame.
