In the run-up to the release of Green Day’s latest album ‘Saviors’ in January 2024, Billie Joe Armstrong and his band members sat down for an interview with Sunrise. As they talked about the upcoming album and shared insights into their music-making process, Armstrong revealed whether he got nervous about putting out new music.
Asked especially about political songs like ‘The American Dream Is Killing Me,’ the singer said:
“Yeah, I get nervous all the time. I think, in a way, it’s like our music has – there is an element of anxiety in it. That is just naturally in it, and I think that that comes across. ‘Cause you just never know. The way people get new music now is a lot different than when we started.”
Explaining the reason behind this feeling, he went on:
“We went from the last era of bands were putting out vinyl, and that was it, and cassettes, and then all the way through CDs, and then illegal downloading, and now streaming. You just are like, ‘Well, I guess we just do the same thing we always do.’ Get in a room and make records and then it ends up being pleasantly surprised.”
Other Concerns Affect The Band’s Releases

October 2023 saw the release of ‘The American Dream Is Killing Me,’ the first single from Green Day’s ‘Saviors.’ Armstrong mentioned in a chat with Canada’s 102.1 The Edge that this politically-themed song was actually written a few years earlier.
The band had previously chosen not to include this track on their 2020 album, ‘Father Of All Motherf**kers,’ due to concerns about the political atmosphere in the US at that time. Armstrong commented on this decision, saying:
“[The song was] low-hanging fruit for — because we have just terrible politics and terrible division in [the] United States. But this time, we brought it out, and it felt like it was the perfect time for it. We got away from the politics for a while, to where we just didn’t want to be like, you know, another pundit on CNN, like finger pointing.”
Their Song Writing Includes Political And Social Matters

Green Day also released two more singles, ‘Look Ma, No Brains!’ and ‘Dilemma,’ with the latter described by Armstrong as a personal reflection on addiction and mental health issues. Despite putting it out on December 7, the band started to work on this song a few years ago while promoting their 2020 album.
Talking about the songs he was writing for the ‘Saviors’ album at the time, Armstrong told NME:
“With the new stuff that I’m writing, I don’t know – a lot of it is kind of more self-deprecating and funny. Not that I’m doing a comedy record or anything. On one hand, it feels autobiographical and funny, but on the other, when you look at it, you can put a social commentary twist to it.”
Green Day will embark on a world tour on May 30, 2024, to support their upcoming album.
