Bad Company’s Paul Rodgers recently sat down with CBS News and opened up about his health crises that almost caused him to loose his singing ability. The rocker suffered two major strokes, one in 2016 and another in 2019, as well as 11 minor strokes, that almost caused him his career.

Here’s what Rodgers said about the aftermath of his secret strokes:

“I couldn’t do anything to be honest. I couldn’t speak. That was the very strange thing. You know, I’d prepare something in my mind and I’d say it, but that isn’t what came out and I’d go, ‘What the heck did I just say?'”

The singer had to undergo surgery, where doctors performed an endarterectomy procedure to remove plaque blocking Rodgers’ carotid artery, which posed a threat to his vocal cords. Paul recalled what the doctors had warned him about before the surgery. He added:

“They told me, they’re very clear, ‘You may not come out of this alive.’ And I said, ‘Oh, well, that’s a plus, isn’t it? Fingers crossed, you know? And when I woke up, I opened my eyes, I thought, ‘Oh, I’m still here.'”

The singer’s recovery process was slow, but with the love and support of his family, Rodgers returned to the studio a year and a half ago, where he recorded his new album ‘Midnight Rose.’

Paul’s wife, Cynthia Kereluk Rodgers, who was present during the CBS News interview, recalled hearing Rodgers sing for the first time since his surgery. She said:

“I didn’t think that would ever happen.”
