Journey vocalist Arnel Pineda has publicly addressed his critics in a message shared on his Instagram. He asked fans who continue to compare him unfavorably to former Journey singer Steve Perry to stop leaving hateful comments on his page.

Pineda directed his message at those leaving unkind and racially charged remarks, making clear that such behavior is not welcome.

“To Whom It May Concern, dear bashers, racists, bigots & hateful people, pls take your negativities and unkind words against me somewhere else coz you are not completely welcome on my page,” Pineda said. “I get it, you love the original members with The Voice in it. I love that too.”

Pineda acknowledged the fans’ attachment to the band’s original lineup while pushing back against the hostility directed at him.

“But life happened & it is what it is right now,” he continued. “No need to be unkind just cause you are exercising your so called freedom of speech rights. That being said, doesn’t make you good human beings. Again, KINDNESS is cheap, and yet, obviously, you can’t afford to share it to others like me.”

He closed his message with a firm request for those with negative intentions to stay away from his page entirely.

“Again, don’t come to my page if your only intention is to hate me,” Pineda said. “Go somewhere else, where you truly belong.”

Pineda has been the lead singer of Journey since 2007. The role has long drawn comparisons — and criticism — from fans loyal to Steve Perry. His decision to speak out publicly marks one of his most direct responses yet to nearly two decades of persistent scrutiny.

Pineda’s path to Journey is one of rock’s more unlikely origin stories. Journey guitarist Neal Schon discovered him in 2007 after coming across videos of Pineda performing the band’s songs on YouTube. Schon recruited him immediately as the new frontman. This came at a time when the band was searching for a replacement following the brief tenure of Steve Augeri, who had served as lead vocalist from 1998 to 2006.

Despite the unconventional start, Pineda has gone on to become the longest-serving frontman in Journey’s history. That distinction, however, has done little to silence a vocal segment of the fanbase that continues to measure him against Perry’s legacy.

Pineda has faced racially charged attacks throughout his tenure. He addressed this directly in his latest message, naming racism explicitly — a shift from simply absorbing the criticism to confronting it head-on.

The statement also comes as Journey navigates a period of transition. Keyboardist Jonathan Cain announced plans to depart the band at the conclusion of their ongoing Final Frontier farewell tour. The tour is scheduled to wrap up in November. With longtime members moving on, Pineda remains one of the band’s most visible and enduring figures — making the continued hostility from a portion of the fanbase all the more striking.
