Andy Summers Blames Stewart Copeland For Ruining The Police’s Future

3 Min Read

Former the Police guitarist Andy Summers recently had an interview with Vanyaland and shared his opinions about what would happen had the band stayed together. Andy mentioned Sting’s reluctancy to reunite for their album sessions in 1986 and pointed out a chance of reunion wasn’t possible due to their drummer Stewart Copeland’s horse riding accident:

“Yeah, I dunno. I really think Sting was pulling away. He really wanted to have a go on his own. I don’t think there was much stopping that. He wasn’t really interested in doing that session, but, you know, Stewart’s accident ruined it anyway, that blew it out of the water. Everybody wanted us to get back together; I mean, they were hovering – the record company in particular – obviously. For all the obvious reasons.”

Throughout time, other group members were individually asked about their opinion about a reunion. In a recent interview, Copeland stated the group still enjoys spending time together, but not as the Police onstage:

“Oh, absolutely, I’m an optimist. I would give us absolutely one chance in a million. I’m not quite sure how that works out as a percentage that’s probably a 0.001 chance. That could happen. We all are enjoying life so much. We did our reunion tour, which kind of punctuated the whole adventure, and we were out there for two years. Come on, you folks got enough of us, surely. We enjoy each other’s company much more when we’re not playing music together. At the dinner table, we get along just fine.”

In a 2022 interview, Summers was asked if the Police will release any reissues despite not reuniting, he explained the situation as:

“The music never seems to go away, which makes you feel very good about it. We didn’t just do something that appeared and was never heard again. You know, we carry on. I can only say that over the next ten years, there’s a lot planned. I know we’re going to make a documentary; there will be a traveling exhibition.

Obviously, they keep repackaging things and doing stuff with the material, so I don’t really know, but Stewart and I have a very smart and energetic manager who intends to make sure this continues in various forms.”

Andy Summers released his latest solo album’ Harmonics of the Night‘ in 2021, and in June, he released an instrumental rendition of the Police’s ‘Roxanne.’
