Former Arch Enemy singer and current DragonForce vocalist Alissa White-Gluz recently discussed her new single “Checkmate” with her side band Blue Medusa. She addressed speculation about whether the song’s lyrics reference her experience with Arch Enemy in an interview with FaceCulture.

White-Gluz explained the cathartic nature of her recent songwriting. She also discussed the personal growth that has influenced her music over the past couple of years.

When asked about the time frame behind her recent songs, White-Gluz responded: “I mean, it’s new. So, it’s not built up from I mean I think hindsight is 2020 and now my eyes are open like Medusa’s eyes when they’re open. Over the last I would say couple of years, I’ve been able to see things a lot more clearly.”

She continued to elaborate on her personal development and how it has affected her perspective: “Thanks to support from really awesome friends and also I think just like maturing as a person and sort of seeing, you know, that’s why one of the lines in Checkmate is, ‘I thrive in truth while you lose control.'”

White-Gluz acknowledged the challenging nature of confronting difficult truths: “And it’s a really scary place to be when you’re sitting in truth because sometimes the truth is really uncomfortable and so I’m able to look back you know over my whole life now and see things differently. But definitely specifically the last couple of years have uh been very impactful for me and you know given me a lot of good writing material.”

When directly asked whether she was referring to something that happened with her previous band, White-Gluz chose to remain cryptic: “I’m not going to ruin the song for anyone. I’m going to let people adjust to it as they need to.”

The singer’s refusal to clarify the meaning behind “Checkmate” has left fans to interpret the lyrics themselves. This is particularly significant given the recent developments in her career.

White-Gluz’s comments about personal growth and seeing things clearly over the past couple of years take on additional significance in light of her recent departure from Arch Enemy. Loudwire reported that White-Gluz parted ways with Arch Enemy on November 23, 2025, after 12 years with the band. She had joined in 2014 as replacement for Angela Gossow. Both parties announced the split amicably via social media without specifying reasons. Arch Enemy stated, “We’re thankful for the time and music we’ve shared and wish her all the best. See you in 2026.” White-Gluz thanked fans and teased “big news in 2026” alongside her solo album.

The formation of Blue Medusa represents White-Gluz’s new creative direction following her departure from the Swedish melodic death metal giants. Arrow Lords of Metal noted that Blue Medusa is a new band featuring the ex-Arch Enemy singer, formed as her side project post-departure. They released their debut single “Checkmate” in early 2026. The timing of the band’s formation and the release of “Checkmate” coincides with her transition to joining British power metal band DragonForce as vocalist around the same period.

The speculation surrounding “Checkmate” has intensified due to the song’s lyrical content and its timing relative to White-Gluz’s career changes. Revolver Magazine highlighted that the track sparked fan speculation tying its lyrics, particularly the line “I thrive in truth while you lose control,” to White-Gluz’s Arch Enemy exit. This speculation was especially fueled by her FaceCulture interview comments about “personal growth” and “seeing things clearly” over the “last couple of years.” Her decision to remain cryptic about the song’s meaning, refusing to confirm any band references to avoid “ruining the song,” has only fueled further interpretations of it as cathartic commentary on her split from Arch Enemy.

The intersection of White-Gluz’s personal and professional evolution appears to have provided rich material for her songwriting. “Checkmate” serves as a potential window into her experiences during this transitional period. Her emphasis on truth and clarity in both her interview responses and song lyrics suggests a period of significant reflection and artistic growth that has shaped her new musical endeavors.
