Alex Van Halen recently opened up about the decision to continue with Wolfgang Van Halen instead of Michael Anthony for Van Halen’s final tour. He revealed that the band actually made an offer to Anthony before bringing Wolfgang on board. The drummer shared these details in an interview with KazaGastão.

Alex explained the circumstances that led to Wolfgang joining the band. He confirmed they reached out to Michael Anthony first.

“Ed and I, as usual, were in the studio alone, because nobody else tolerated it, they’d rather be at the beach! I’ve got news for you, you’ve gotta work for this shit,” Alex said. “Nobody showed up, and one day Ed and I were playing and this bass comes in, and it had a nice feel to it. And behind the curtain it was Wolf… For the record we did call Mike, because we owed him that. We did call him, and he just didn’t answer.”

The drummer also praised Wolfgang’s independence and career choices following his time with Van Halen.

“Wolf’s very careful that he doesn’t want to be Ed Jr. He was in a very tough spot, meaning he could have just continued with the Van Halen stuff, but he decided he was his own man,” Alex continued. “Everything that he’s done – I’m very proud of him, by the way. That’s probably not the right thing to say about an adult, he’s [35] years old! You shouldn’t be proud of an adult, right… That’s what you do to your children!”

This revelation provides new insight into the complex dynamics that led to one of rock music’s most significant lineup changes. The changes had been brewing for years before Wolfgang’s official debut with the band.

The transition from Michael Anthony to Wolfgang Van Halen was part of a larger restructuring that began in the mid-2000s. Ultimate Classic Rock reported that Anthony was forced to take a pay cut and sign away his rights to the Van Halen band name before going on tour with the group in 2004. This marked the beginning of the end for Anthony’s tenure with the band he had been part of since 1974.

Wolfgang officially replaced Anthony for the 2007 reunion tour with David Lee Roth. This move generated significant controversy among fans. Guitar World noted that Wolfgang Van Halen received backlash from some Van Halen fans when he replaced longtime bassist Michael Anthony for the band’s reunion tour. The decision was particularly difficult given Anthony’s long history with the band and his popularity among fans.

The circumstances surrounding Anthony’s departure were more complex than initially revealed. AudioPhix detailed that Anthony told New York Magazine that he believes the Van Halen brothers disliked his sauce business and felt it undercut their music. This business venture, which Anthony had developed as a side project, apparently created tension within the band that contributed to his eventual exit.

Since leaving Van Halen, Wolfgang has successfully established himself as an independent artist. He deliberately avoids his father’s shadow. He now leads Mammoth WVH, a project where he consciously avoids performing Van Halen songs to carve out his own musical identity. This approach has allowed him to build a career based on his own merits rather than trading on the Van Halen legacy. It demonstrates the independence that Alex Van Halen praised in his recent comments.
