Alex Lifeson shared his thoughts about Neil Peart’s passing in a recent interview with Q104.3 New York.
“After Neil passed, it didn’t take more than a few minutes before we started getting e-mails from all kinds of drummers who wanted to audition for the band,” Lifeson revealed. “They were thinking we were just gonna replace somebody that we played with for 40 years and who wrote all the lyrics for our music.”
“We had the conversation because we can’t avoid it,” he continued. “Geddy is my best friend and I must talk to him every day. It’s not just Rush Rush Rush. I have a deep loving relationship with this man. It’s not all about creating something that we did from the past.”
“You never know what life brings you. Right now, I’m super happy doing what I’m doing,” Lifeson added. “I’m engaged with a lot of musical stuff. I love being a musician. I love playing guitar. I love playing guitar so much it’s not just a vehicle for making a living. It’s me. It’s at the core of my essence. So, it doesn’t have to be about Rush or Envy of None.”
Fans continue to speculate about potential Rush reunions since Neil Peart’s death in 2020.
Lifeson’s recent comments indicate his reluctance toward replacing Peart. However, the band’s perspective on performing together has evolved over time.
A report from Louder Sound reveals that Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson have reconsidered their stance on continuing Rush with another drummer. This shift came after their performances at the Taylor Hawkins tribute shows in 2022.
The tribute shows featured collaborations with acclaimed drummers Danny Carey and Chad Smith. These performances created new possibilities for the surviving Rush members.
Louder Sound notes Lifeson’s significant concerns about recreating Rush’s magic with a different lineup. He emphasizes preserving the band’s legacy from their final tour.
The guitarist now focuses on his new musical projects. His work with Envy of None provides fresh creative opportunities beyond Rush’s legacy.
