Adam Lambert On Coming Out, ‘I Think I Lost Some Fans’

From realizing his differences in sixth grade to pursuing musical theater and auditioning for ‘American Idol,’ Lambert faced challenges, including homophobia. He acknowledged losing some fans when his sexuality was revealed but remained true to himself. Post-‘Idol,’ Lambert achieved milestones, including a top Billboard album as the first out gay person and touring with Queen.

And now he spoke to Them News about how the coming out process has impacted his career. He said:

“I think I lost some fans at that point. But I always said to myself, ‘Well, those aren’t the fans I want anyway.’ If they think I’m gay, and they don’t like that, then go away. That’s who I am.”

Expressing that he is even more comfortable with himself and his sexuality than before, Lambert continued:

“I feel more very sure of who I am, more than I ever have, more comfortable my skin than I ever have. And I want to bring that to my music.”

Brian May On Queen’s Decision To Continue With Adam Lambert

After the death of Freddie Mercury, Queen made the decision to continue their legacy with Adam Lambert on lead vocals. Lambert has been collaborating with Queen since 2011, bringing a fresh energy to their catalog while paying homage to Mercury’s legacy. Their collaboration grew stronger and stronger over time, leading to a series of shows in Europe in 2012 and eventually a series of tours and festival performances around the world.

The collaboration between Queen and Adam Lambert was an unexpected development for Brian May. Initially, May and the rest of the band were unsure how to proceed after a period of touring with Paul Rodgers. In November, Brian explained in detail his decision to continue with Lambert to People Magazine. He said:

“The amazing thing is we didn’t look for Adam.I often think, ‘My God, how did this happen?’ He is kind of a gift from God. Roger and I, after we lost Freddie, said ‘OK, this is the end of it.’ We knew consciously, ‘No, we’re not going to this anymore.’ He just appeared. The voice is extraordinary. There is no other voice in the universe like his voice. Plus he has all the other stuff, I mean, look at the guy. He’s born to wear diamonds.”

After finishing their North American tour in 2023, Queen and Lambert will take a few months off before heading to Japan for a five-concert tour in 2024, starting on February 4.
