Jonathan Cain: Steve Perry Sounds Like A Million Bucks

Steve Lukather’s son, Trev, and Phil Collins’ son, Nic, have teamed up with Steve Perry on a song after starting a band together. The song is called ‘It Could Have Been You,’ and is planned to drop on May 7.

Trev took to Instagram to announce the new song and mentioned Jonathan Cain also gave his thumbs up. He also added what Cain said of Perry: that he ‘sounds like a million bucks’:

“The power of Steve’s vocals is on another level. One of a kind. That’s why he’s the GOAT. To add to the pressure of doing it justice, not only did I want to knock it out of the park for my friend and mentor but for my father in law, Jonathan Cain who is the co-writer on this epic tune. I sent him the master when we finalized. He called me stunned and blown away. He praised the arrangement and performances and he said how SP sounded like a million bucks. To get the approval from them both was everything but we have a feeling the world will connect to our version the way we all did making it. Thank you SP for not only for the honor, but for your belief in us and what we do. That is never taken for granted!”

What Trev Lukather Thinks Of Perry

Trev and Nic teamed up to create a band called The Effect, joined by Toto’s Steve Maggiora on keyboards and Emmett Stang on vocals. The band dropped two tracks, ‘Unwanted’ and ‘Something Wrong.’ Trev’s decision to form The Effect came from his desire to make something fresh and meaningful. He pushed past any doubts and brought together a group of ‘brothers’ who shared the same creative vision.

In a separate interview with Greg Prato, Trev discussed working with Steve Perry under The Effect. He said:

“After working with Perry on my last band, Levara’s debut album, I knew Steve had a lot to do with those legendary Neal Schon melodic solos, but you also can’t deny the feel behind Neal’s performance, feel, and tone. Now, my father-in-law [Jonathan Cain] has been so supportive with the help of pushing this band forward, and one of the best songwriters ever, so I’m very lucky to have had great relationships with a lot of the artists that have influenced me through the years. Haven’t met Peter Gabriel, Mutt, or Trevor, but that would be an honor.”
