Zakk Wylde recently reflected on his years working with Ozzy Osbourne, sharing his admiration for the legendary musician in an interview with Loudwire.
When asked about his favorite moment that demonstrates Osbourne’s humanity and love for his fans, Wylde highlighted the musician’s unwavering dedication to performing. He recalled Osbourne’s commitment to his final show. The rock icon chose to continue doing what he loved rather than retire.
“Just even that last show, truly. He just loved it, playing. Instead of just going, ‘Well, you know what? Instead of just like, I did it already, you know?’ Instead of just enjoying your life and whatever, he was just like, ‘No, I love doing it, so we’re gonna do this show.’ And I was just like, wow. He willed himself to do that last gig,” Wylde said.
Beyond his passion for performing, Wylde praised Osbourne’s character and personal qualities. He described the musician as consistently kind and compassionate to everyone around him. His remarkable resilience in the face of challenges stood out to Wylde.
“But he was always cool to everybody. I would always tell everybody he had basically all the best qualities you would want in somebody. Just his kindness, his compassion and his resilience and his toughness, man. It was truly unbelievable,” Wylde continued.
Wylde also reflected on moments when Osbourne’s voice was strained during performances. He described his own efforts to support the musician through those difficult times. Despite these challenges, Osbourne never gave up.
“There’d be certain times at shows where if his voice was banged up, I was sending out prayers to John Paul II and Mother Teresa to get him through this thing and to the big guy. But he’d always pull through. There was never any quit in him. Those are like some of the best qualities you want in a person and he had them all. He was the best for sure, without a doubt,” Wylde concluded.
Wylde’s deep respect for Osbourne stems from a professional relationship that defined much of both artists’ careers. Guitar World reports that Wylde joined Osbourne’s band in 1987 at just 19 years old. This partnership would span nearly four decades and made Wylde one of the most integral members of Osbourne’s touring and recording lineup.
Throughout their time together, Wylde contributed to some of Osbourne’s most celebrated and commercially successful albums. Loaded Radio highlights that Wylde served as a primary guitarist on landmark records including No Rest for the Wicked (1988), No More Tears (1991), and Ozzmosis (1995). These albums showcased the guitarist’s technical prowess and helped solidify Osbourne’s legacy as a solo artist following his departure from Black Sabbath.
The guitarist’s contributions extended beyond the studio into the live arena. He became known for his energetic performances alongside Osbourne. MusicRadar notes that Wylde’s work with Osbourne earned critical acclaim. His work helped establish him as one of the most respected guitarists in rock music. His presence on stage became synonymous with Osbourne’s live performances, creating a musical partnership that fans came to cherish.
Wylde’s recent comments reflect the genuine bond formed between the two musicians over their decades-long collaboration. His tribute underscores not only Osbourne’s professional dedication but also the personal impact the legendary rocker had on those who worked closest with him. For Wylde, Osbourne represented more than just a bandleader. He was a mentor and inspiration whose qualities extended far beyond his musical talents.
