Wolfgang Van Halen recently explained his decision to avoid performing his father Eddie Van Halen’s material with Van Halen. He shared his perspective in an interview with Cody Tucker.
The musician addressed why he refuses to capitalize on the Van Halen legacy by performing classic songs like “Panama” on a regular basis.
“I could easily just shack up and be like, ‘Hey, I’m the only place where you can hear ‘Panama’ being played by Van Halen,'” Wolfgang Van Halen said. “But I would never want to do that.”
He referenced his father’s philosophy about artistic integrity. He drew from Eddie Van Halen’s experience with cover songs.
“You know, my dad had a really good quote back in the day when they were doing a lot of covers on the album ‘Diver Down,’ [1982],” he continued. “He didn’t like that, and he said, ‘I would rather fail on my own than succeed with somebody else’s material.'”
Wolfgang emphasized how this principle guides his own career decisions with his band Mammoth.
“And that’s exactly how I feel about playing Van Halen stuff,” he said. “It’s like, I can do it, and I have done it on a special occasion, for the Taylor Hawkins thing. But overall, I would rather fail doing Mammoth stuff than succeed playing ‘Panama’ every night. It’s just not in the cards for me.”
Wolfgang’s commitment to forging his own path has already proven successful with his solo project Mammoth WVH. This demonstrates that his artistic integrity extends beyond mere philosophy into tangible achievements.
Wikipedia reported that his debut album Mammoth WVH earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Song for “Distance.” He wrote this deeply personal track when his father was dealing with cancer complications. The recognition validates his decision to pursue original material rather than rely on his family’s established catalog.
The commercial success of Mammoth WVH further supports Wolfgang’s artistic choices. Wikipedia noted that the band’s first two singles, “Distance” and “Don’t Back Down,” both debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay Chart. Mammoth became the first act to achieve this feat since The Glorious Sons in 2019.
Wolfgang’s dedication to his solo project continues to yield impressive results. Blabbermouth revealed that his second album Mammoth II, released in 2023, debuted in the Top 5 of the Billboard Top Album Sales chart. It returned him to No. 1 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, with critics praising it as superior to his debut.
The band has since expanded their reach globally. They have toured with major acts including Metallica and Foo Fighters. Blabbermouth also documented that Wolfgang performed at the 2024 Academy Awards alongside Ryan Gosling, Mark Ronson, and Slash. This further established his credentials as an independent artist rather than simply Eddie Van Halen’s son.
