Wolfgang Van Halen has made revealing comments about his instrumental role in bringing David Lee Roth back to Van Halen, shedding new light on the dynamics behind the band’s reunion tours in an interview with Song Cake.

In a candid discussion, Wolfgang explained his behind-the-scenes involvement: “You know, I was the one who called and brought Dave back to begin with, and I was the one making the set lists too.”

He added, “So I did everything I could to get dad and the guys to play stuff that they hadn’t played before in a long time.”

The younger Van Halen’s influence on the band’s setlists resulted in some surprising song choices during those reunion tours. “So, I think that’s how we ended up on those tours, playing stuff like ‘Drop Dead Legs,’ and even ‘Dirty Movies’; stuff I don’t think Van Halen really ever played,” he revealed.

Wolfgang’s motivation was clear – to create the best possible experience for fans while supporting his father Eddie Van Halen. “So, it was fun to just try and give the best show possible, witnessing everything that my dad had to live through, and because he just wanted to play music,” he explained.

Reflecting on the band’s approach to music-making, Wolfgang emphasized the pure passion that drove his father: “You know, man, there was never a desire for drama. He just wanted to play guitar. And at the end of the day, I just want to make music. Why can’t you just make music and have a good time with people?”

These insights provide a unique perspective on Van Halen’s reunion period and highlight Wolfgang’s significant but previously understated role in orchestrating David Lee Roth’s return to the band.

Recently, Roth has reignited interest in the Van Halen legacy by returning to the stage in 2025, playing his first full concert in over five years at the M3 Rock Festival in Maryland and performing an entire set of Van Halen classics before announcing a summer tour of his own, though this isn’t a formal band reunion with the surviving Van Halen members.

Despite past efforts and invitations from figures like Sammy Hagar to join broader Van Halen–themed tours and occasional talk of reunions over the years, plans for an official Roth-fronted Van Halen reunion have stalled repeatedly, with lingering tensions and the absence of key original members complicating any true comeback of the band itself.
