Wolfgang Van Halen revealed the reasoning behind his band’s recent name change from Mammoth WVH to simply Mammoth in a fan-posted Q&A session on YouTube.

The name change creates a meaningful connection to Van Halen family history. It specifically references Eddie Van Halen’s early musical career.

“It’s what we wanted the whole time. It was supposed to be a direct reference to my Dad’s, the first band where he was the singer, ’cause I’m playing guitar and I’m singing,” Wolfgang explained.

Speaking about balancing his musical identity with his family legacy, he continued: “Man, is it a f*cking tight rope to walk, with the shadow I’m under and the expectations. And it’s, like, I wanna be able to have the opportunity to reference my lineage, but not copy it and just put a flag in it and sit there and play ‘Panama’ for everybody every night. I wanna be able to be my own person.”

The band currently performs under the new name. They have an upcoming show scheduled at Debonair Music Hall in Teaneck, New Jersey, on May 11th, 2025.

The name ‘Mammoth’ holds significant historical weight in the Van Halen family legacy. It connects past and present in meaningful ways.

The Spokesman-Review noted that Mammoth served as the original name for what would later become Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen performed as the lead vocalist during this period, before David Lee Roth joined the group.

K-ZAP documented Wolfgang Van Halen’s early musical journey. He joined Van Halen as their bassist in 2006 at just 15 years old.

Wolfgang launched his solo project, Mammoth WVH, after his father’s passing in 2020. Records from K-ZAP show his impressive musical range. He recorded every instrument himself on the project’s debut, which featured the emotional tribute song “Distance.”

The latest name change to Mammoth represents more than a connection to family history. It showcases Wolfgang’s evolution as an artist who honors his legacy while creating his own musical path.
