Alice in Chains vocalist William DuVall recently addressed the future of Giraffe Tongue Orchestra following the tragic passing of Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds. He shared his thoughts in an interview with The Logan Show.

DuVall’s comments came in response to a direct question about whether the band would continue after Hinds’ death in August of last year.

When asked about the possibility of Giraffe Tongue Orchestra doing anything again, DuVall was candid about his feelings.

“Without Brent, I can’t see it personally. That was a huge thing. I never would have closed the door on that idea as long as all three of us were alive. But with Brent gone, it’s really hard for me to imagine,” DuVall said.

Despite the uncertainty about the band’s future, DuVall expressed gratitude for what they were able to accomplish together.

“However, the songs on that record live on. It just makes me that much more gratified that we were able to even do that record. I wish we could have played more shows. I wish we could have properly toured that record, but again, that’s water under the bridge now. I’m just glad the record exists and the songs exist and I could see the songs being performed in different capacities,” he continued.

DuVall acknowledged that while he wouldn’t completely rule out future possibilities, his current feelings about continuing under the Giraffe Tongue Orchestra name remain conflicted.

“I don’t know about Giraffe Tongue Orchestra. Like I don’t know about performing under that moniker, you know. I mean I guess one should never say never, but that’s just my feeling on it now. Brent’s gone, you know. That was such a that’s like a that was a real stab,” he concluded.

DuVall’s emotional response reflects the deep creative bond that existed within Giraffe Tongue Orchestra. The supergroup brought together some of alternative metal’s most respected musicians for a unique collaborative project.

Wikipedia reported that Giraffe Tongue Orchestra was founded in 2012 by Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan. The band featured an impressive lineup including drummer Thomas Pridgen of The Mars Volta and bassist Pete Griffin of Dethklok and Zappa Plays Zappa. The band represented a convergence of different musical backgrounds and styles, creating a distinctive sound that set them apart in the alternative metal scene.

The supergroup’s formation was particularly significant as it brought together musicians from vastly different musical worlds. Metal Injection noted that the project was originally the brainchild of Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds and The Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman. They conceived the idea as a way to explore new creative territories beyond their primary bands.

Giraffe Tongue Orchestra released their debut album “Broken Lines” in 2016. The album showcased their experimental approach to heavy music. Brooklyn Vegan documented that the band made their live debut at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. This marked one of the few occasions when all members performed together on stage.

The tragic loss of Brent Hinds on August 20, 2025, in a traffic collision marked the end of an era for the supergroup. Hinds’ death not only affected Mastodon but also left a significant void in Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, as DuVall’s recent comments clearly demonstrate. The guitarist’s creative vision and collaborative spirit were integral to the band’s identity. This makes any future continuation under the same name feel incomplete to the remaining members.
