Courtney Love has had her love/hate relationships in the past with names like Billy Corgan and Kat Bjelland. So it might be safe to say that she hasn’t shied away from criticizing others, even her loved ones.
However, in this particular case, the Hole frontwoman had nothing but love for the singer in our article, whom Love likened to Kurt Cobain by calling them a ‘true musical genius.’
The singer was a guest on the WTF podcast with Marc Maron in 2022 when she made the revelation while talking about her ‘actual, genuine’ friendship with Lana Del Rey.
Then, right after she gave insight into her relationship with Del Rey, Courtney likened the younger singer to her late husband Kurt and carried on by praising the pair’s ‘musical geniuses.’ The rocker said:
“Lana and Kurt are the only two true musical geniuses I’ve ever known, and by that I mean they can Spielberg anything… She’s a genius, too. She’s got the integrity that Kurt had. The only two people I know that I can say [that about].”
Love then revealed why she hadn’t counted other ‘rock icons’ in her list of ‘true musical geniuses’ and what made Del Rey ‘special:’
“By the way, [R.E.M.’s Michael] Stipe? Bono? Yes, these are people that I know and love. Billie Joe [Armstrong], sure… But Lana? She’s got a magic thing. And she’s not even f*cked up.”
So, as Love felt that Lana was the only ‘true musical genius’ alongside her late husband Kurt, she isn’t the only admirer of the ‘Say Yes To Heaven’ singer. Names from Bruce Springsteen to Taylor Swift had praised Lana previously, as both complimented the 38-year-old singer’s songwriting skills.
