Whitesnake guitarist Joel Hoekstra addressed his delayed tribute to Ozzy Osbourne in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Hoekstra explained his reasoning for not immediately posting about Ozzy’s passing. He emphasized his personal stance on social media tributes.

“I didn’t post about Ozzy yesterday simply because I’m not comfortable getting clicks/likes over someone’s death,” Hoekstra said. “More importantly, I never personally knew, played for, auditioned for, or even met Ozzy.”

The guitarist went on to share his genuine connection to Ozzy’s music and its impact on his career.

“I do/did however love Ozzy/Sabbath, particularly as a kid. Those songs (along with AC/DC) made me pick up a guitar,” he continued. “To this day I often play the Electric Funeral riff in my live solo.”

Hoekstra concluded his statement with a personal touch. He added, “So, my heart goes out to those that knew him. I am just one of the many who loved the music, owned the shirts and was a fan. These embarrassing early photos of me (one with my very first guitar) are the best ‘tribute’ I can offer. RIP Ozzy!”

Hoekstra’s musical journey reflects the broader influence that Ozzy and Black Sabbath have had on countless guitarists over the decades.

Wikipedia documented that Joel’s early musical inspiration came from his family of classical musicians. He began with cello and piano before transitioning to guitar after hearing AC/DC’s Angus Young. This transition highlights how heavy metal pioneers like Ozzy shaped an entire generation of musicians who would later become professional performers themselves.

The guitarist’s career trajectory demonstrates the lasting impact of those early influences. Michael Cavacini reported that beyond Whitesnake, Hoekstra has had a prolific career including work with Night Ranger, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Broadway shows like Rock of Ages. This versatility showcases how the foundational inspiration from artists like Ozzy can lead to diverse musical opportunities across different genres and platforms.

Hoekstra’s extensive experience in the music industry spans multiple decades and various high-profile collaborations. His official biography revealed that he has worked with numerous renowned artists and continues to be one of the busiest guitarists in the business. His ability to seamlessly transition between rock, metal, and theatrical performances demonstrates the broad musical foundation that early influences like Black Sabbath provided.

The guitarist’s approach to honoring musical legends reflects a more personal and authentic perspective in an era of social media tributes. Guitar Player noted that Hoekstra’s thoughtful approach to his craft extends beyond just technical ability to include genuine respect for the artists who shaped his musical identity. His decision to share personal photos rather than generic tribute posts underscores the authentic connection many musicians feel to their early inspirations.
